I do identify with this essay, I do believe that people who has an accent or a problem speaking another language are largely discriminated, as Amy said it her mother was intelligent as any other person who speaks well English, therefore she felt that hr mom was under appreciated.
All these comments, laughing, joking put people self esteem down, this is an indirect form of bulling but of course in many of these occasions there is nothing we can do.
I would like to know what can a person do in this case. Having a language disability is very annoyed what will be the best approach, how we make them understand that when people laugh or make a comments does not make us feel good, the person feels very angry and desperate because it does not depend on the person. This is what people does not understand either because they are ignorant or because they are stupid. Many of these people that does not speak the language correctly because they were never exposed to English sounds when they grew up. Therefore for a bilingual person it is difficult or almost impossible to speak a language that he or she was never exposed.
Only with a lot of exposure and practice this is possible.
